Houston Preaching Mission

“A Vision TO SPREAD GOD’S WORD” - “The highest ideals of the Christian faith”

The Houston Mission was envisioned in 1948 under the guidance of Dr. and Mrs. William Cyrus and Nina Houston, faithful leaders in Central United Methodist Church.  Their enduring vision is to Outside by Danielenhance the lives of the people of Central and our Concord community by introducing them to the “highest ideals of the Christian faith.”  Along with their pastor, Dr. Frank Jordan, the goal was “Great biblical preaching should be continued with a flourish.”

In 1949 the first Houston Preaching Mission was held with Dr. David MacLennan of Canada as guest speaker.  Dr. and Mrs. W. C. (Cyrus and Nina) Houston, faithful church members, set up a perpetual fund to be used to secure fine preachers of any denomination to hold an annual Preaching Mission.

This past year Dr. Susan McArver helped us celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation.  You can watch her sermon here.

Fellowship Meals

Several times throughout the year we gather in our fellowship hall for a meal and fellowship.  Some meals have themes for the season like Thanksgiving or Easter.  And some meals, like our lowLow Country Boil country boil and oyster roast are just because we enjoy them!  There may be a short program or there may be lots of fellowship.  Around 120 people gather on a Wednesday night or Sunday after worship and celebrate Central.

Communion

At early service, we celebrate Holy Communion every week. At the 11:00am service, we celebrate communion the first Sunday of the month. All persons are always invited to the Lord’s Table.

Children's Ministry

At both services, the children in our congregation are invited to the front of the church every week to hear a message specifically for them from one of our pastors. If they are too young to sit through the sermon, they are invited to enjoy either our Nursery (ages birth to four years) or our Children's Church service (ages four to second grade), at 11:00am.
