“A Vision TO SPREAD GOD’S WORD” - “The highest ideals of the Christian faith”

The Houston Mission was envisioned in 1948 under the guidance of Dr. and Mrs. William Cyrus and Nina Houston, faithful leaders in Central United Methodist Church.  Their enduring vision is to enhance the lives of the people of Central and our Concord community by introducing them to the “highest ideals of the Christian faith.”  Along with their pastor, Dr. Frank Jordan, the goal was “Great biblical preaching should be continued with a flourish.”

Featuring Reverend Carol Howard Merritt:
Howard Merritt became an ordained minister while still in her twenties. Her book Tribal Church: Ministering to the Missing Generation has become a handbook to many congregations in ministering to the younger generation. She is a wife, mother and minister.

For over fifty years, this endowment has brought to our community the finest preachers and communicators of the gospel in the world.  Preachers have come from all over the United States, Canada, England, South Africa, Kenya, and other parts of the world.

The keynote event is the annual Houston Preaching Mission, traditionally held in October of each year.  This several day event includes exceptional preaching, great music, and fellowship meals and time for the whole congregation.  Many of the area’s great musicians and groups have led worship during the fall preaching event.

This year, on October 18 and 19 in 2009, The Reverend Carol Howard Merritt from Washington, D.C. will be our preacher.  Merritt is an outstanding Presbyterian clergywoman with a passion to reach and empower young adults.

On October 24 and 25 in 2010, The Reverend Donald Davis, internationally famous storyteller and preacher, will lead our mission.  The author of over 50 books, he has been a featured at the National Storytelling Festival every year since 1981.

At other times of the year, special events and short-term classes are also held under the auspices of the Houston Foundation Trust.  For example, Dr. James Fleming, biblical archeologist, has led weekend lectures on biblical history and archeology.  We have also participated in all three of the Beginnings programs introducing people to the basics of Christianity.
