Wednesday Nights are big at Central. From September to December, and January to April, we offer a number of activities for the whole family. We have from 50 to 100 people participate in our mid-week offering. At 5:30p.m., we serve a full supper for adults and children in our downstairs Coltrane Memorial Fellowship Hall. The cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children. The menu ranges from soups to pastas to pancakes to Brunswick stew to pizza and everything in between. The food is either prepared at the church or catered. We serve until 6:15p.m. and people simply fellowship during the first hour. Childcare Available from 5:30-9:00pm for infants and young children. Wednesdays are a wonderful time to meet some new people at Central, get a healthy meal, and simply touch base with God in the middle of week. We resume our Wednesday night programs on January 13th with dinner and programs for all ages. On our first night, we encourage both children and adults of all ages to join us to watch the movie “Up.” “Up” is a sweet and thrilling Pixar animated feature film about the possibilities that remain in a life shadowed by loss and disappointment. It is about resurrecting buried dreams and using the judgment acquired over a lifetime to modify those dreams. Carl (an older man) and his young friend Russell go on an adventure that will bring tears, fears, and ultimately joy. Everyone, young and old, must see this movie. Later in January, Pastor Andy will give a presentation about his trip to Africa. Dana Richardson will tell us about Bridges Out of Poverty (a new program offered by Habitat for Humanity) we’ll look at the national health care debate, and we’ll learn about how to start a community garden. We will celebrate Ash Wednesday on February 17, and the following week, Pastor Andy will begin a Lenten study that he and Sally wrote called Celebrate the Risen Christ. We’ll finish up the spring session with a videobased series called "If You Want to Walk on Water, You’ve Got to Get Out of the Boat." Also on Wednesday nights, Katie Warlick will be leading an in-depth study of the Gospel of John. This is a 15- week study that uses videos featuring Mickey Efird, an ordained Presbyterian minister and professor of Greek and Biblical studies at Duke University Divinity School. The purpose of the study is to give the earnest person a method of approaching and interpreting the books of the Bible. This study looks at the unique characteristics of John’s Gospel and how it differs from the Synoptic Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. |
